Gastroesophageal Reflux in Infants<\/b><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in infants occurs when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. This usually happens due to dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscular valve between the esophagus and the stomach.<\/p>\n

This valve opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and then closes to prevent stomach contents from flowing back. When the valve does not function properly, stomach contents can return to the esophagus and cause symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, and discomfort.
